The history of GOOD FOUNDATION RADIO is quite fascinating. In a nutshell, the lives of three individuals crossed as a result of a sinkhole.
One, the homeowner. Two, a foundation stabilization contractor. Three, an attorney.
John Thompson contracted Taylor Yarkosky with Advanced Pier Technology (APT) to repair his home as a result of sinkhole activity on his property. For all intents and purposes, the repair process came to an abrupt halt before it even began as a result of sheer bureaucracy and unclear Florida Statute.
Issues arose concerning insurance, engineer reports and permit issuance. The combination of issues caused John, the homeowner, undue hardship and unnecessary delay.
Taylor, as the contractor, was caught up in the bureaucracy of securing permits from the county, and found himself having to explain to John the issue was beyond his control. Initially, John was skeptical of a contractor under deposit explaining that delays were beyond his control. After all, the deposit was given to the company, not the county.
Disgusted, John became involved in the permit process and learned existing laws on the books were fraught with inconsistencies and inaccuracies, in addition to sheer laziness and inept county employees.
John made a decision to become proactive, in turn morphing a business relationship into a friendly (friendship) relationship with Taylor of APT. We were truly on the same page, and did not realize we had much in common. The combination of a homeowner and contractor, united on all fronts, was a new concept to state and local officials. Local officials were more than happy to place blame on the contractor, APT, all the while knowing they were the responsible party for the issues. Little did they know John had completed due diligence all the way to Tallahassee.
The core issue is homeowner rights. From the outset of disclosing possible sinkhole activity, the homeowner is put on the defensive. Insurers instinctively suspect fraud and treat each claim as such, and local governments in addition to insurers are simply overburdened and uneducated to the complexities and options available to homeowners when it comes to repairing their home.
In a meeting of minds one particular day, Taylor and John pondered the best way to educate homeowners of their rights. Taylor mentioned the possibility of a radio show. With a radio background, John thought it an excellent idea, thus Good Foundation Radio was borne.
Due to the complexities of insurance claims, Taylor had an existing relationship with Brian McClain, an attorney with Morgan & Morgan. Immediately the concept of an attorney corroborating with a contractor and homeowner came to mind. The three together would be an excellent means to educate the public.
Good Foundation Radio began as “keeping you level in the land of sinkholes and surprises”, but quickly evolved into “keeping you on solid ground in the land of situations and surprises”…While we continue to address sinkhole issues, the show has become broader in nature, whereas we address social issues, trends and events, culture and celebrity, as well as human interest stories which impact the daily lives of all Floridians.
